Ford is exactly what 49ers neededFord’s first
Breaking down the implications behind the San Francisco 49ers’ acquisition of Dee Ford."The San Francisco 49ers made headlines on Tuesday when they traded for Kansas City Chiefs pass rusher Dee Ford. General manager John Lynch surrendered a 2020 second-round pick to pry Ford away from the Chiefs Jaquiski Tartt Jersey White , who was signed to a one-year, $15.4 million franchise tag. To facilitate the deal, San Francisco inked Ford to a new five-year, $87.5 million dollar contract, one of the biggest handed out since the opening of free agency’s negotiating period. Lets break down some of the takeaways from the 49ers’ new signing.Ford is exactly what 49ers neededFord’s first step is among the fastest in the NFL. He excels at beating offensive tackles to their spot, bending the corner and pressuring or sacking quarterbacks. Ford accounted for 13 sacks, 29 quarterback hits and 78 pressures (per Pro Football Focus) in 2018. He’s a true edge rusher and the perfect complement to a 49ers defensive front chalked full of first-round talent. Defensive lineman DeForest Buckner racked up 12 sacks and 53 pressures last season Womens George Kittle Jersey , and those numbers are likely to climb with offenses now needing to account for Ford.A significant investmentHis five-year, $87.5 million dollar contract makes Ford the second-highest paid player on the 49ers’ roster behind quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He’s also among the highest paid pass rushers in the NFL. Detroit Lions defensive end Trey Flowers was the top defender to hit the open market, landing a five-year, $90 million contract at the start of free agency. His $18 million annual value is just ahead of Ford’s $17.5. Ford is now the league’s fifth-highest paid edge rusher behind Khalil Mack, Demarcus Lawrence, Von Miller and Flowers. The move isn’t without risk2018 was far-and-away Ford’s best season. His 91.0 pass-rush grade was the league’s best while also racking up more pressures than any other edge rusher. The rest of Ford’s career has been far from stellar. His overall grades from 2014-17 were 63.1, 52.5 Womens Weston Richburg Jersey , 65.9 and 54.5, respectively - all concerning. The 49ers are clearly hoping that 2018 was a glimpse of things to come for Ford, especially after signing him to a long-term deal. Nick Bosa still on the tableThe 49ers’ pass rush will get a significant boost with the addition of Ford. That doesn’t mean that Lynch is out of the market, though. The 49ers still own the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, an ideal spot to land a franchise player. With rumors swirling of Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray going first-overall, Bosa has picked up steam for the 49ers in recent mock drafts. Signing Ford gives the team flexibility at second-overall, but doesn’t mean they aren’t still committed to investing further in the defense. Today is cornerback Emmanuel Moseley.PDTShareTweetShareShare49ers 90-in-90: CB Emmanuel MoseleyThe San Francisco 49ers have worked the past three years overhauling their secondary and may have finally gotten the answers they are looking for. They signed Jason Verrett in free agency to pair with Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon may bounce back from his disappointing second season. Emmanuel Moseley was an undrafted free agent picked up in 2018. So who is he? Imagine how the injuries piled up for the secondary. Remember how they were scrambling for bodies? Well, Moseley would be someone to start. He’s on the practice squad; the 49ers need someone for the Oakland Raiders game. Activate him and, he’ll fill right in.Well, that was his only game. His single game where he got only one tackle. Three days later he was placed on injured reserve. Not the rookie season one would hope for. Moseley had a long road ahead of him in 2018, but it’s gotten even more robust in 2019. Given the small sample size, his best football may be yet to come. Or it may already be over. Basic infoAge: 23 Experience: second season (0 seasons accrued)Height: 5’11 Weight: 184 poundsCap StatusHe is in the second year of a two-year UDFA deal. His Base salary is his cap hit, $495 Laken Tomlinson Jersey White ,000.What to expect in 2019Right now there’s not much more from Moseley than him being a camp body in 2019. The 49ers secondary just got more competitive with their additions. If Moseley can make anything, it’d be contributing on special teams. His burst speed is his biggest strength, but it might not be enough given where he sits on the roster. He will be getting some preseason time, considering he’s been with the team for a year, but with the additions and development of other prospects, it’s hard to see much more from him besides those preseason appearances. The 49ers went from five cornerbacks in 2017 to six in 2018. That number isn’t going to inflate to seven in 2019.No one can predict injuries in the preseason, but looking at this in mid-June suggests that Moseley is too buried to make any impressions during training camp. Don’t expect to hear or see much of him in 2019. Moseley has some helpful attributes Robbie Gould Jersey White , his abrupt injury combined with his role from 2019 (not called up until November) keeps him a developmental prospect at this stage of his career. Odds of making the rosterThe locks for cornerback are Jason Verrett, Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon, and K’Waun Williams. Tarvarius Moore may or may not take a spot depending on if the 49ers decide to keep him at safety. Then there’s Greg Mabin to round things out. If Moseley has a chance, it’s beating Mabin out for that last spot. That’s a tall order for a cornerback that is serviceable at best. Moseley will be starting in Week 4 of the preseason and heading back to the practice squad until injuries occur.
